From the Editor Hello, and welcome again to our web site. The new issue of the Clinical Window Web Journal is there. In the future, a new topic will appear every two months, and our address is the familiar www.datex-ohmeda.com/clinicalwindow. Now we will move our focus to critical care. With the topic of Gas Exchange, we concentrate on the monitoring of metabolism by indirect calorimetry. With critically ill patients, this method can be used to determine energy expenditure, and to adjust nutrition according to the patient’s individual needs. Measurements of oxygen consumption and carbon dioxide elimination can also be used as an aid to optimize the patient’s ventilator support. In critical care, the relationship between consumption and delivery of oxygen is particularly important, as it may predict patient’s outcome. Sincere thanks to our guest authors for their effort. Based on feedback from our readers, we have slightly modified the appearance of our pages. There are new menu selections which make it possible to revisit previously published issues of Clinical Window . In addition, we will start publishing congress proceedings and selected abstracts to support the Clinical Window concept. Ilkka S. Kalli MD, PhD, MBA
