This article is a summary of the presentation given in the Datex-Ohmeda’s Clinical Window symposium at the ISICEM 2001 congress in Brussels, Belgium

EEG monitoring in the ICU is becoming increasingly popular. It provides valuable information, but requires some knowledge about the basic EEG features.

EEG can facilitate early identification of impending neurological deficits before irreversible impairment would take place. Important applications of EEG are for patients in a coma, or in any patients who may have an unstable, but potentially treatable condition:

  • Status epilepticus or recurrent seizures
  • Elevated intracerebral pressure (ICP) or variable cerebral perfusion
    - Post-traumatic disorder
    - Postoperative condition
    - Subarachnoidal hemorrage (SAH)
    - Brain tumor
    - Hydrocephalus
