Dear Clinician, In this new issue, the Clinical Window Web Journal (CWW) will touch this base with our new topic Brain Monitoring. Brain monitoring can be an important source of clinical information, both in critical care and in anesthesia. In scientific publications, articles describing new or improved methods for assessing brain function appear quite regularly. Brain monitoring seems to be major research topic for a good number of international study groups. In CWW, we believe that research papers appearing in scientific journals are an important source of educationally valuable information. Science reflects the many possible directions healthcare technology may proceed in the future. In the current issue of CWW, we are continuing with our scientific and educational scope by publishing both practical and theoretical papers. Our authors start from the routines of today’s brain monitoring technology. They then deepen the scope, discussing some state of the art topics related to the scientific research in brain monitoring. In CWW, our mission is to spread clinically important educational information. Therefore, we do not constrict ourselves to just the medical technology of today. We also convey news and reviews from the scientific world to you, our readers. We want to spark ideas and facilitate discussion; you are always welcome to send us your feedback. Since we regard it of great importance to support the aims of other groups and organizations that also promote science and education, I am proud to publish very recent news: the Clinical Window Web Journal has become a major sponsor of the Virtual Anesthesia Textbook (VAT). VAT is a collaborative project involving many individuals globally, and it has a very clear goal in education and in the spread of information. This project was conceived by Chris Thompson during the April 1996 World Congress of Anaesthesia meeting in Sydney, Australia. I encourage you to learn more about VAT by visiting their web site at http://www.virtual-anesthesia-textbook.com. This 'virtual textbook' with a Web approach is based on a comprehensive set of links. VAT is an excellent source of anesthesia related information. The number of individual visitors at the VAT site has been growing steadily. Ilkka S. Kalli MD, PhD, MBA
