Control of Infection and Contamination
Editor-in-Chief: "Proper control of infection and contamination improves safety in healthcare" Ilkka Kalli MD, PhD, MBA In the current issue, Clinical Window writes about control of infection and contamination in healthcare. It has been suggested that proper use of supplies and accessories plays an important role in infection control throughout the hospital. Hence, by providing tailored solutions according to care area and need, it is possible to help clinicians to improve patient safety. Author of our leading article Dr. McCaughey, PhD (New York, USA) is a health policy expert who has won many prizes for her writings, lectures widely, and appears frequently on television and radio. She is founder and Chairman of the Committee to Reduce Infection Deaths (www.hospitalinfection.org). In 2007 Clinical Window’s educational program succeeded well. Our web pages now display HON foundation’s certificate, and we organized scientific symposia at three medical congresses (over 300 clinicians attended ESA and ESICM, respectively). In 2008, we will organize four Clinical Window symposia. Scroll down to the bottom of the page to see the comprehensive list. Click here for the rest of the editorial views. (More...)
Doctors fail to clean their hands before treating patients more than half the time, and when they fail to clean their hands, caregivers working alongside them also fail to clean their hands. In the United States, the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, many organizations that promote healthcare quality and patient safety, and individual hospitals emphasize hand cleaning, and even urge patients to speak up and request that anyone treating them have clean hands. That’s a start, but not enough to curb the problem of hospital infections.
In fact, at the risk of sounding iconoclastic, there has been almost too
much emphasis on hand hygiene and too little attention paid to the importance
of cleaning hospital equipment, rooms, and textiles. As long as hospitals
are inadequately cleaned, doctors’ and nurses’ hands will become re-contaminated
seconds after they are washed. (More...)
