Editor-in-Chief: New focus on neonatal care
We expand our clinical scope to neonatal intensive care In its 25th issue Clinical Window (CW) extends its scope to neonatal intensive care units (NICU), with a topic: "Early Health and Neonatal Care". CW has been collaborating with the NICU professionals' international web site that is closely linked to Karolinska University Hospital In Stockholm, Sweden. I am extremely happy to publish clinical articles "99nicu" team has prepared for Clinical Window. Here I publish three papers, and more NICU related articles will appear in the coming issues. First of the papers is from Dr. Stefan Johansson, MD: Preterm birth predisposes to cardiovascular disease in adulthood. Emphasizing the important aspect of "early health", preterm birth may be linked to adult cardiovascular disease. He presents us the interesting concept of "early life programming effects", and includes 10 references for further reading. Dr. Alexander Rakow, MD writes about Acute renal failure in the newborn. Starting from pathophysiology and incidence, he goes through care considerations, explaining underlying reasons as functional (pre renal), intrinsic (renal) or obstructive (postrenal). Building on practical experience, he then adds views e.g. on fluid therapy and maintenance of electrolyte balance. Concluding with outcome issues he underlines importance of early diagnosis and prompt start of treatment. In the article, there are 12 carefully selected references from the scientific literature. CW's co-operation with the "99nicu" team of neonatal care experts has been educationally rewarding. I like to include "99nicu" info explaining aims and scope of their professionals neonatal medicine web site. See our fourth text. Clinical Window has organized 5 scientific symposia in the last 12 months, and over 1300 healthcare professional have participated. That makes 260 as our average audience, further encouraging our team's effort to continue. Thanks for coming! Enjoy tuning in to the neonatal intensive care. Ilkka Kalli MD, PhD, MBA
